Gio Caldero joined our Axum family early this year and we knew right away he would become an integral part of our team. If you have had the honor of meeting Gio, you know he is one of the warmest and kindest people you’ll ever meet, making you feel like you belong. Not only that, but his passion for coffee and roasting makes him an incredible barista, serving up our delicious, hand-crafted coffee and beverages with heart… and a lasting impression!
We sat down with Gio and asked him a few questions so our Axum Community can get to know him even better like we do. Read on to find out his unique background, favorite coffee drink, why he chose Axum, and more!
What is your favorite part about being a barista?
I’d have to say that my favorite part of being a barista is having the opportunity to be the first interaction people have in the morning, the conversation that follows could potentially make or break their day, and I do my best to make sure it begins positively! I pride myself with the knowledge that through the efforts of myself and my amazing team, my customer will always get an amazing cup o’ joe!
What is something unique about you that many people wouldn’t know or wouldn’t guess?
I have an eclectic job history that includes working on movie sets, running tattoo shops, culinary education, as well as being a certified special effects makeup artist!
Why Axum?
After years of being a Barista in NYC, when I moved to Florida, it was hard to find that feel of warmth and family in a shop. But the first time I walked into Axum as a customer, the air was joyful and welcoming. I knew I wanted to be part of what was going on behind the counter, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have found such a wonderful team that truly feels like family.
What music is on repeat right now?
Metal, 90’s Hip Hop, Reggae, and PUNK.
What is your favorite drink to create? What is your favorite coffee drink to have yourself?
Right now my favorite drink to create is the GROG, because it reminds me of Christmas. My go to drink is the Creme Brulee, iced with oat milk.
What has been your favorite Axum memory so far and why?
Since starting at Axum, every moment has been so incredible. Truly I love my time with my team, but if I have to pick a highlight, getting the opportunity to work more hands on with the coffee at the Roastery has truly been remarkable.
Any other passions outside of coffee?
I am an avid collector of all Nerdom, as well as a frequent player of Dungeons and Dragons. As well as getting tattooed, and of course video games!
